PILATES - GROUP WORK
Pilates is an exercise system that creates a strong foundation for the body via controlled strengthening movements. With an aim to strengthen and mobilise the muscles surrounding the spine, pelvis and shoulder girdle, I use Pilates in its mat-based form in small group settings, sometimes incorporating small equipment.
Pilates is named after its founder Joseph Pilates (1883-1967) - although he himself named it 'Contrology' - German-born Pilates developed his system throughout his lifetime. Emigrating to America in the 1920's, Joseph's system first became popular with dance community in New York in the 1960's. His system achieved main stream popularity in the late 1980's and has remained popular ever since.
Pilates works to form a mind/body connection in a very real sense. Each movement is carefully executed after establishing a strong foundation. This foundation is achieved by using an awareness of the body, its posture and developing a sense of proprioception.
“Contrology develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit.”

TAI CHI / QIGONG
Meditation Through Movement.
A fantastic way to start the day! A 45minute class of movement based meditation. Can be practiced both standing and seated.
Qigong (pronounced chee kung) means "Energy-Work" it is an holistic system of movement, breathing and meditation. It's roots are in Chinese medicine and philosophy. Qigong is used to balance and cultivate energy (qi) to promote healthy living.
TaiChi is practiced both for martial arts and health benefits, as a part of Qigong it is a vast subject in its own right. I prefer to emphasise the 'health benefits' angle of TaiChi and this reflects in the Forms (routines) I choose to teach.
